Insurance Payouts Made to Smallholder Farmers

JICA's Index-based Crop Insurance Promotion Project (ICIP) in collaboration with the Oromia Insurance Company and other stakeholders organized a payout ceremony on April 12, 2023. The ceremony was organized in Lome District of East Shewa Zone, Oromia Region, for target farmers who purchased agricultural insurance to mitigate the impact of risks in their agricultural activities.

The project has reached 57,700 smallholder farmers through trainings, from which, approximately 10,000 farmers have purchased insurance. More than 2,500 target farmers have received payouts so far due to droughts that have affected their crop production.

H.E. Dr. Sofia Kassa, State Minister of Ministry of Agriculture thanked JICA for its cooperation at the ceremony. She touched on the importance of protecting smallholder farmers and stressed that this project is very important for strengthening the resilience of farmers that are at risk of losing their crop to drought and other climate factors.
