渋谷区西原町の子どもたちと研修員がごみ拾いで国際交流 International Exchange with Children in Nishihara town and Participants at a Cleanup event

JICA東京ではSDGsの取り組みの一環として研修員と福利厚生プログラムでごみ拾いを行なっていますが、2月18日、インドネシア、東ティモール、モンゴル、ベナン、マレーシア、ケニア、モーリタニア、イエメン、ボツワナ、パプアニューギニア、ガーナ、ナイジェリア、タンザニアの１３か国の研修員と、第3回「街いく探検隊」ニシハラチームのごみ拾いに参加させていただきました。
昨年12月の第2回にはJICA東京の湧水池に来てくれた、「街いく探検隊」ニシハラチームの皆さん。
日本中の海や街をきれいにしている「街いく探検隊」の主役は地域の子どもたち。ごみを拾いながらクイズやゲームをしたり、街の秘密を探して歩きます。

早咲きの桜や梅の花が咲き、気持ち良いそよ風が吹く春らしい陽気の中、渋谷区スポーツセンターに集合。
研修員の国の国旗を準備してくれたチームの方が国名を呼び上げると、手を挙げる研修員たち。
今回は11名の予定が当日急遽27名の研修員が参加してくれて、子どもたちもびっくりしていました。
そして早速クイズの始まり。このスポーツセンターは昔は何だったでしょう..?
今はこんなに住宅が多い渋谷区西原ですが、なんと明治時代にはたくさんの牧場が！ここも羽衣舎という牧場だったそうです。その後、東京教育大学になり、現在のスポーツセンターになったという説明と写真に、時代の移り変わりを感じます。

子ども、大人合わせて総勢87名の「街いく探検隊」は、大行列でスポーツセンターを出発。
車が来ると隊列を自ら整備してくれる頼もしい子どもたち。
子どもたちはトングを持ってごみを探し、見つけたら大人が持つごみ袋に入れていきます。
子どもたちはごみを見つけるのが本当に早い！植え込みがあるとサーッと中に潜り込んで、あった！とごみを手に出て来ます。研修員も分かるように、大きな声で「Burnable(燃えるごみ)！」「Unburnable(燃えないごみ)！」と声を上げると、嬉しそうにごみ袋を差し出す研修員と、誇らしげにごみを入れる子どもたち。
研修員が「ここにもあるよ！」とごみを見つけると駆け寄って拾ってくれたり、「このごみはどっち..？」と一緒に考えたり。
今回はかつての玉川上水だった緑道や、京王線の地上線跡を辿るコースでしたが、緑道にはひっそりと建つ、建築家やクリエイターが設計した「Tokyo トイレプロジェクト」のユニバーサルトイレもあり、研修員も興味を示していました。
ごみ拾いやごみの分別をきっかけに言葉を超えたコミュニケーションが自然にできて、率先してごみを探す子どもたちの姿に、自分の家族を想い出す研修員や、日本の清潔さを地域で守る活動に感動する研修員がいました。
同世代の子を持つ研修員が保護者と子育ての話をしたり、研修員の国の言葉で話かけるなど、あちこちで心温まる交流がみられ、このイベントは本当に幸せな空気に包まれていました。

研修員の感想
・ごみ拾いイベントでは素晴らしい時間を過ごしました！子どもたちが地域社会をよりきれいで美しいものにしようと率先して行動する姿を見て、心が温かくなりました。この日は楽しいアクティビティが盛りだくさんで、私たち皆が環境をケアすることの大切さを学びました。本当に思い出に残る体験でした。
・このイベントに参加できたことを光栄に思います。多くのことを学びましたし、このイベントは子どもたちの自立心、自国を愛する心、自国に対する責任感を育んでいます。私はこの文化を自分の国に伝え、私の子どもたちから始めたいと思います。温かい歓迎をありがとうございました。
・これは楽しめる内容で、かつ教育的でした。開催してくれた学校と主催の皆さまに感謝します。このような幼い年齢で子どもたちがこの文化を取り入れることは素晴らしく、この体験は成長する子どもたちと共にいつもあるでしょう。皆さんは素晴らしくフレンドリーで、私たちを温かい気持ちにしてくれました。ありがとうございました。

JICA Tokyo has been conducting cleanup event with participants in the Participants Welfare Program as part of our SDGs initiatives. On February 18, we joined in the 3rd "Machiiku Tankentai(Town Explorers) " Nishihara team's cleanup event with participants from 13 countries: Indonesia, East Timor, Mongolia, Benin, Malaysia, Kenya, Mauritania, Yemen, Botswana, Papua New Guinea, Ghana, Nigeria, and Tanzania.
The "Machiiku Tankentai" Nishihara team visited JICA Tokyo's spring pond last December.
They clean up oceans and towns all over Japan and local children play a leading role in this event. They also play quizzes and games, and walk around looking for the secrets of the town while picking up trash.
We gathered at the Shibuya City Sports Center in the spring-like weather with early-blooming cherry and plum blossoms and a pleasant breeze.
When the team members who had prepared the national flags of the participants' countries called out their countries’ names, the participants raised their hands.
The children were surprised to see that 27 participants joined, instead of the 11 participants signed up.
The organizer started the quiz and asked “What used to be this sports center？”
Now there are so many houses in Nishihara town, but there were many ranches in the Meiji era! This place was also a ranch called Hagoromo Ranch. After that, it became Tokyo University of Education, and the current sports center. The explanation and photos show how the times have changed.

The "Machiiku Tankentai," a group of 87 people including children and adults, departed from the Sports Center in a large line.
The children were dependable, organized themselves in formation when a car passed.
Children search for trash with tongs, and when they find it, they put it into an adult's garbage bags.
They were really quick at finding trash! When they see a planted area, they quickly crawled inside and came out with trash in their hands! When they shout out "Burnable!” or “Unburnable!”, participants were happy to offer the garbage bags and the children proudly put the trash in the bags.
When the participant found a piece of trash, he ran to it and said, "Here! Here!” and children rushed to pick it up. and sometime they wonder together "Which kind of garbage is this..?”.
This time, the course was to follow the greenway that was once the Tamagawa Waterway and the traces of the Keio Line's ground track, and there was also a universal toilet of the "Tokyo Toilet Project" designed by architects and creators that stands quietly on the greenway and some of the participants were also interested.

The participants were moved by the sight of children taking the initiative to search for trash, which reminded them of their families, and by the activities of the local community to protect the cleanliness of Japan.
The event was filled with a truly happy atmosphere, with heartwarming interactions seen everywhere, such as participants talking with parents of the same generation about raising children, and some people speaking to participants in their languages.

A surprising amount of trash was collected and we returned to the sports center.
“Anyone want to share your thoughts on today's event?” The organizer asked and the participants commented with emotion saying "This is a really wonderful activity!” The children also said with embarrassment they were glad to have the opportunity to interact with people from overseas. Later on, participants from six countries said they would incorporate this activity when they return to their countries.
It is wonderful activity that helps children develop an awareness that they are responsible for creating a clean environment from a young age, and helps children love their town even more by learning about background and thoughts of the people who created it.
I am very happy that the participants also joined this time so that the children could experience that there are many different countries in the world and that we all have a common desire to create a better world.
After we said goodbye and headed back home, we were very moved to see the children chasing after us on their bicycles and saying "See you again!" over and over again.
