梅雨ながらお天気に恵まれたある一日、JＩＣＡ東京ではＳＤＧｓの取り組みの一環として、福利厚生プログラムで地元・西原町の「街いく探検隊」ニシハラチームのごみ拾いイベントに参加しました。研修員はトンガ、ケニア、ミクロネシア、マラウイ、ザンビア、コートジボワール、エリトリア、バヌアツ、ナウル、東ティモールの1３名が参加してくれました。

それでは「街いく探検隊」ニシハラチームならではの、国際色豊かなごみ拾いのスタート。
とても小さな子どもたちもいて、小さな手で一生懸命ごみを拾う姿が本当にかわいいです。
子どもたちがごみを拾うと、「燃えるごみ」「燃えないごみ」などを分別し、該当のごみバッグを持つ大人を探して入れてもらいます。このカラフルな、内袋入りで繰り返し使える「街いく探検隊」のごみバッグはJICA東京が資材協力させていただきました。
研修員は子どもたちがごみ拾いに意欲一杯な姿、参加者や通行人を気遣って自ら隊を整える姿に大感激。「これは非常に良い教育だ」と繰り返し呟いている研修員も。
ごみ拾い中は街の歴史地理クイズを楽しんだり、道行く方に思いがけず応援してもらうことも。終盤、あと一つでビンゴが完成！〇〇ごみを見つけよう！と大盛り上がり、ゴール直前に奇跡的にコンプリートしたチームも。

たくさんの準備をしていただいた「街いく探検隊」の皆さん、参加してくれた研修員の皆、ありがとうございました！

研修員の着眼点が、環境問題や地域社会、パートナーシップ等もさることながら、より包括的に、子ども達が良き市民となるべく、幼いうちから社会規範や倫理観を育てる日本の教育姿勢に向いていたことが印象的でした。
最初は少し緊張していた子ども達も、研修員と協力しながらのごみ拾いを経て、終わる頃には、日本のお菓子を研修員に渡して英語で話し掛ける等、小さな交流があちこちに生まれていました。
研修員の「自国でも是非同じ取り組みをしたい！」と、感激した様子の発言に、たった２時間足らずのご近所イベントからここまで国際協力の本質に迫ることが出来るのだと嬉しくなりました。

・これは、私の日本滞在中の最高の経験の一つであり、これからもあり続けるでしょう。エクササイズをしながら子どもたちやフレンドリーな日本の人たちと交流できて良かったです。私が最も感銘を受けたのは、この活動が善良な市民になり、現世代と次世代に有益な環境をケアする方法を子どもたちに教える、楽しくて良い方法であるということです。 素晴らしい！私は私の祖国コミュニティ、マラウイでこの取り組みをやってみます。環境を大切にするというポジティブなマインドセットで子供たちを育みましょう。

JICA Tokyo has been conducting cleanup event with participants in the Participants Welfare Program as part of our SDGs initiatives. On a sunny day in spite of the rainy season, we joined in “Machiiku Tankentai(Town Explorers) " Nishihara team's cleanup event with 13 participants from Tonga, Kenya, Micronesia, Malawi, Zambia, Cote d'Ivoire, Eritrea, Vanuatu, Nauru, and Timor-Leste.

This time, students of University of the Sacred Heart was participating as part of the "Community Development Exercise" class.
"Machi-iku Tankentai", which cleans the seas and cities throughout Japan, is led by children who will lead the future, and conducts community cleanups and community exchanges while exploring the history and secrets of the town.

The “Machi-iku Tankentai” Nishihara team was now ready to start picking up trash with an unique international flavor to this team.
Some of the children were very small, and it was really cute to see them trying their best to pick up trash with their tiny hands. After the children pick up trash, they are sorted into burnable, non-burnable, etc. and asked to find an adult with the appropriate trash bag to put it in. JICA Tokyo provided the materials for these colorful, reusable “Machiiku Tankentai” garbage bags with an inner bag.

Thanks to everyone's cooperation, the event ended safely with the collection of a lot of trash. When the organizer asked the participants about their impressions, they replied, “There is a lot of garbage in my country, but I learned this activity will help clean up the town. I will start this activity myself when I go back to my country.” This event truly embodied the SDGs Goal 17 ”Let's achieve our goals through partnership!”
I think it was a great opportunity for the participants to interact with local people and children outside of the training program and experience the Japanese way of life. I am sure that the children of Nishihara-town will also benefit from this experience of working together with participants from a distant country to pick up trash.

who participated in the event!

I was delighted to hear the participants say, “I would love to do the same thing in my own country!” It made me happy to know that a neighborhood event that lasted less than two hours could bring us so close to the essence of international cooperation.

・This was and will remain one of my best experiences while in Japan. It was good interacting with friendly Japanese people including children in the exercise. What inspires me most is that it is a good and funny way to teach children on how to be good citizens and take care of the environment to benefit both present and future generations. FANTASTIC! I will replicate the initiative in my community back home MALAWI. Let our children grow with the positive mindset of taking care of the environment.
