JICA東京センターでは、研修員の福利厚生プログラムの一環として納涼会を実施しました。
参加してくれたのはブータン、チリ、シエラレオネ、トーゴなどの１９名の研修員。また、インターンシッププログラム中の５大学の学生が運営を手伝ってくれました。

学生には日本に古くからある、蒸し暑い夏を涼しく過ごす知恵をテーマ毎にプレゼンしていただきました。
〈くらし編〉では扇子、浴衣、すだれを、〈食編〉ではかき氷、流しそうめん、水ようかん、ところてんをピックアップ。
また〈風鈴〉と〈花火〉について、その由来や仕組み、なぜ夏に良いのかを説明。
日本の自然環境と調和する生き方はシンプルで素晴らしい、と改めて思いました。
さらに、夏といえば〈怪談〉。怪談が夏にポピュラーなのには面白い背景があります。
代表作として、小泉八雲の「むじな」（のっぺらぼう）と「皿屋敷」を紹介。ストーリーを深刻な様子で読み上げて、「..これで涼しくなった？」と聞く学生がかわいい。

プレゼンの後はガラスの風鈴に皆で絵付け。金魚や朝顔など、日本の夏らしいイラストのサンプルもいくつか用意しました。研修員はインスピレーションのままに好きな模様を描き上げる方、何度も手帳に下書きをして慎重に慎重に桜の樹を描く方など、様々でした。

まだ絵付けに熱中している方もいましたが、切りのいいところで皆で緑あふれる中庭へ出て花火タイム。
真っ暗な中庭に色とりどりの花火がきれいでした。自国の家族にライブ中継している方がいたり、最後に皆でつけた線香花火に静かに見入っているグループもいました。
花火から戻ると、食堂「Oasis」の料理長・新藤さんが準備してくれた美味しいすいかと冷たい麦茶をいただき、良い納涼が出来ました。

研修員からは「これは文化的、伝統的にとても重要なイベント。参加できて非常に良かった。」、「怪談は面白かった！ぜひ野外舞台でやってほしい」、「素晴らしいイベントだった！もっとこういうイベントをやって欲しい」といった声をいただきました。
インターン生の皆さんも研修員のやさしさに感動したり、初めての国の方とも交流して色々な事を感じたり、とても心に残る実習だったようです。この経験が皆さんのよき糧となるよう願っています。

インターン生の感想
・スライドを作る上で、自分も知らなかったような日本食の歴史について知ることができました。また、英語スピーカーの方々へ向けたスライド作りは、わかりやすい英文を試行錯誤する実践的な時間になりました。日本の蒸し暑さや、夏の食事の特徴を伝えるために、自然な語彙に心がけるだけでなく、「the global boiling」などの有名な言葉を引用して工夫をしました。
・今まで関わったことのない国の方々と接することにより、その国についてもっと知りたくなりました。
・国際色豊かな研修員のみなさんと日本の伝統や文化を共有できたこと、知ってもらえたことがとても嬉しかったです。馴染みのない文化に一生懸命頷いて聞いてくださった研修員を見て、準備してよかったなと達成感を得られた時間になりました。

We held a Summer Cooling Out Event at JICA Tokyo Center as part of participant’s welfare program.
Nineteen participants from countries including Bhutan, Chile, Sierra Leone, Togo, etc. attended in the event. In addition, students from five Japanese university in JICA Tokyo internship program helped with the operation of the event.
The students were asked to give a presentation on each theme about the traditional wisdom of Japan to stay cool during the hot and humid summer.

In the "Life" theme, they picked up a Sensu-fan, Yukata, and Sudare, and in the "Food" theme, they picked up Kakigori-shaved ice, Nagashi-Somen, Mizuyokan, and Tokoro-ten.
They explained also about "wind chimes" and "fireworks", the origin and why they are good for summer.
Their presentation reminded me that the Japanese way of living in harmony with the natural environment is such simple and great.
In Japan, "ghost stories” is also associated with　summer. There is an interesting background to why ghost stories are popular in summer.
The story of "Mujina" (faceless) by Koizumi Yakumo and "Sarayashiki-Okiku’s Well" were introduced as tipical popular ghost stories. The story is read out in a serious manner by student and when it finished, she said " So now, do you feel cooler?”,that was cute.

After the presentation, everyone painted glass wind chimes. We prepared several samples of Japanese summery illustrations such as goldfish and morning glories. Some of particiants drew up their favorite patterns as inspiration and some drew carefully and deliberately cherry trees after many drafts in their notebooks.
Next, everyone went out into the green courtyard for a fireworks display.
The colorful fireworks looked very beautiful in the dark courtyard. Some people were broadcasting to their families in their countries, while others were quietly watching the sparklers that everyone had set off at the end.
After returning from the fireworks, we enjoyed delicious watermelon and cold barley tea prepared by Mr. Shindo, head chef of our “Oasis” dining, which made for a nice cool evening.

Some of participants commented, "This is a very important cultural and traditional event. I am very happy to have been able to participate.”, “ The ghost story was interesting! I would like to see this event held on an outdoor stage!”, “It was amazing! I wish they would hold more events like this.”.
The interns were impressed by the kindness of the participants and felt many things by interacting with people from other countries for the first time. We hope that this experience will be a good source of nourishment for all of them.

Comments from the interns
・I learned a lot about the history of Japanese food that I didn't even know about when I was making the slides. Also, making slides for English speakers was a practical time for me to try and make easy-to-understand English sentences. In order to convey the hot and humid climate of Japan and the characteristics of summer meals, we not only tried to use natural vocabulary, but also quoted famous phrases such as "the global boiling" to make our slides more creative.
・I want to learn more about the country by interacting with people today from countries I have never been related with before.
・I was very happy to be able to share and get to know Japanese traditions and culture with the international participants. Seeing the participants nodding their heads and listening intently to the unfamiliar culture gave me a sense of accomplishment, and I was glad that I had prepared for this event.
