―Enjoy the view of Hakone in autumn while cleanup―
As part of JICA's SDGs activities, a cleanup hike was held at Mt. Kintoki in Hakone with participants.

Climb a steep trail looking forward to seeing Mt.Fuji

JICA has been implementing various SDGs initiatives, and as part of the participants' welfare program, we organized a cleanup hike for participants to enjoy nature while picking up trash as the participants' cleanup campaign.
Since there are usually many requests for Mt. Fuji from the participants, we decided on Mt. Kintoki, where we can see Mt.Fuji right in front of it.
We were blessed with good weather and the participants seemed to feel relaxed as they passed through the buildings of the Tokyo area and entered the greenery Odawara-Hakone area.

We each carried a garbage bag and started hike from Kintoki Shrine, where Silkie chickens were roaming cheerfully.
Cleanup trash in the mountains while listening to birds chirping and the sound of the wind is like a treasure hunt, an exhilarating experience.
After about 20-minute walk, we met a huge rock, "Yadori Iwa," that had been split in half.
Kintoki Mountain is said to be the mountain where Kintaro played when he was a child, and there are many sites related to Kintaro in this area, and Yadori Iwa is one of them. One of the participants took a picture of the rock saying, “This is the rock that Tanjiro of Demon Slayer Kimetsu slashed in half!”. There are many support branches placed by climbers on the rock, and it’s nice to see this kind of Japanese sense of humor.
After passing the Yadori Iwa, the slope gradually became more and more steep and we all climbed at our own pace, drenched in sweat.
As we climbed higher, the trees change color, and we enjoyed the autumn leaves as we crossed the final steep climb to the summit.
The magnificent Mt. Fuji appeared in front of us! Everyone cheered as they were moved by the sight of Mt.Fuji. It made all the effort worthwhile.
From the summit, we could see the dynamic topography of Hakone formed by volcanoes, including Owakudani Valley, Lake Ashi, and the outer rim of the mountain.
Everyone took pictures at their favorite spots, and then had lunch at Kintoki Teahouse with delicious udon noodles or a box lunch that they had brought.
There are also records of people who have climbed Mt.Kintoki more than 4,000 times, so we can see that it is a mountain loved by the locals.

It’s sad to leave but we descended the mountain in the sparkling afternoon sunlight, and from here we divided into two groups, one for hot spring Onsen and the other for sightseeing.
The hot spring baths in front of Lake Ashi had such a great view and hot water that even though it was almost time for the bus, no one wanted to come up.
We didn't have time to visit the Hakone Sekisho, so we only walked around Hakone Shrine. Even in the late afternoon, many people were visiting the Peace Gate facing the lake.
There are so many places to see in Hakone that I would like to introduce to the participants, but since the main purpose of today's event was cleanup hike, we had to part ways with Hakone.
I would like to thank all the participants who participated in cleanup hike in support of sustainability, and to all those who cooperated with us!

Comments from participants:
・My 1st time experience nature onsen nice views of Lake Ashi―This trip gave me insight into how Japan protects the mother of nature well as well with empathy and understanding for nature.
・The event is refreshing especially for those of us who are new to Japan. It gives us a chance to explore and at the same time conduct SDGs activities and a great time meeting other JICA participants.
・I always advocate for supporting Mother Nature and maintaining a clean environment for a sustainable life and future generations. I strongly suggest similar activities eg river cleaning, beach cleaning while we promote less touristy attractions that are not known. Such physical activities help the participants to ease and de-stress their study challenges and life in Japan. A platform that able for us to communicate with other participants and exchange our thoughts, views and advice.
・The event was so great, had experiences to know new friends from various countries among JICA participants. Hiking was tough at first but I enjoyed a lot. Thank you for arranging such a wonderful event.
