JICA東京の町内にある西原小学校で、年に一度開催される「国際交流デー」に今年も招待いただきました。Nishihara Elementary School which locates close to JICA Tokyo invited us to participate in the annual International Exchange Day again this year.

当日はJICAの研修プログラムのため来日中の研修員15名が小学校へ訪問。タイやベトナムからガボン、南スーダンまで様々な国籍の研修員が小学生との交流のために土曜日の早朝から集合しました。

渋谷区語学学校からも17名が参加しました。

小学校に到着後、6年生のブラスバンド演奏とともに体育館へ入場。小学生ながら統率のとれた美しい演奏に驚きながら着席しました。

まずは生徒代表の挨拶と、研修員からの挨拶を行い、研修員からはフィリピン出身のサイさんが「このような素晴らしい会に招いていただいて感謝している、ちょうど自分が幼いころ小学校で行った活動やイベントを思い出し嬉しく思っている」と挨拶。

その後は4年生が運動会で披露した大江戸ダンスを研修員の目の前で発表してくれました。東京に20年以上伝わる踊りで、日本の音楽と踊りに研修員も興味津々のようでした。

それぞれの研修員も自分の小さな頃や、故郷の子供たちを思い起こしながら楽しそうに小学生の発表に見入っていました。

体育館でのプログラム終了後は、全校生徒の皆さんに花道を作ってもらいハイタッチや挨拶をしながら退場しました。

On the day of the event, 15 participants from JICA program visited Nishihara elementary school. Participants from various nationalities from Thailand to South Sudan gathered early Saturday morning to interact with elementary school students. Seventeen students from Shibuya City Language School also participated.

Once arriving at the elementary school, they were welcomed into the gymnasium with music played by the marching band. It was a beautiful performance that was very well executed by 6th graders.

The opening ceremony started with a greeting from the student representative, followed by a greeting from the participants. The Filipino representative of the participants expressed his greeting as follows; "I am grateful to have been invited to such a wonderful event, and I am happy to remember the similar international activities and events I did at my elementary school when I was a child."

After the greetings, the fourth-year students presented an Oedo dance that they performed on their sports day. It is a dance that has been passed down in Tokyo for more than 20 years, and the participants seemed to be very interested in the music and dance of Japan.

Each of the participants enjoyed watching the performances by the elementary school students, reminiscing about their own childhood and the children in their hometowns.

After the program in the gymnasium, the participants left the venue, walking down the corridor with high fives and greetings from the students who had come outside their classrooms to welcome them.

休憩の時間を挟み、1年生から6年生まで各クラスからそれぞれ研修員を迎え、それぞれのクラスで準備した交流プログラムや発表に参加しより近い距離で国際交流を行いました。

低学年は言葉がなくても伝わるボールゲームや折り紙を使いながら、笑顔とボディランゲージを交えながら日本の文化やお互いの好きなものを紹介していました。

高学年の教室では、生徒の皆さんに準備してもらった日本の文化紹介に研修員が参加。けん玉にチャレンジしたり、お祭りの様子を寸劇で体験したりと、普段の日本の生活では触れることができない文化を経験しました。

最初に握手をした時は恐る恐る手を差し出していた生徒の中には、最後のお別れの時にはハイタッチしながら挨拶をするようになった子もおり、短時間ながら言葉の壁を超えて仲良くなれたことがよく分かりました。

各クラスから戻ってきた研修員全員も興奮冷めやらないまま「なんてかわいいんだろう！」「こんなお土産を貰ったんだ！」など口々に感想を言い合っていました。

生徒の皆さん、研修員の両方にとって思い出に残る一日となったようです！

After the breaks, the first to the sixth grades welcomed one participant to each of their classes and engaged in international exchange which they prepared for this day.

The lower grades used ball games and origami which can be play without words and introduced Japanese culture using body language.

In the upper grade classrooms, the participants participated in the introduction of the Japan culture prepared by all the students. They tried Kendama, and experienced extraordinary Japanese culture through participation in small plays.

Some of the students, who were afraid to hold out their hands when they first shook hands with the participants, ended with high-fives when they said goodbye for the last time, and it was clear that they were able to get close to each other despite the language barrier.

The participants came back from each class still excited, and were exchanging their eventful experiences with each other, showing the souvenirs they received.

It was a memorable day for all participants!
