2024年3月まで JICA北海道（帯広）の長期研修員として北見工業大学大学院に留学していたインドネシアのガトットさんからのメッセージが届きました！
We have received a message from Mr. Gatot, an Indonesian ex-participant of JICA KCCP (long-term training program) who had studied at Kitami Institute of Technology until March 2024. (The original English text follows Japanese one.)

　独立行政法人国際協力機構（JICA）の奨学金を得て、北海道の北見工業大学（KIT）に留学していた時の経験をお話ししたいと思います。2021年、私は光栄にも土木環境工学の修士課程でJICAの奨学金を受けることができました。私は2022年4月にKITに入学し、COVID-19の渡航制限により2022年6月に北見に到着しました。
　北見に到着して、私は都会の喧騒からかけ離れた北見の穏やかで緑豊かな環境に魅了され、勉学に理想的な場所だと感じました。北海道の人々は外国人を歓迎し心を開いてくれたので、私の経験はさらに良いものとなりました。
私の日本での研究は聡明で親切な指導者である富山和也教授の指導の下、1年次、20単位のコースワークを修了することができました。コースは魅力的で、高度な技術や情報に満ちあふれていました。勉強と並行し、私は研究室の同僚と網走や釧路のプロジェクト現場を訪れ、日本の高度なメンテナンス技術を実際に体験する機会もありました。

また夏休みや冬休みには、JICAが主催する道路アセットマネジメントに関するセミナー（東京、名古屋、大阪で開催）に積極的に参加し、刺激を受け続けました。余暇にはKITの前副学長のもと伝統武道である居合道に励み、北見の有名なスポーツであるカーリングにも挑戦しました。

2年次には、特に「トリップベースとユーザー満足度アプローチを用いた国際ラフネス指数（IRI※）に基づく道路メンテナンス基準の開発」の研究に力を入れました（※IRIは道路の平坦性を評価する指標）。KIT-DS（北見工業大学ドライビングシミュレータ）を用いた実験を行い、富山先生のご指導の下、論文を執筆しました。この研究のおかげで、インドネシアのラブアンバジョと日本の札幌で開催された国際会議で発表することができましたし、JICA短期コースの各国からの参加者にKIT-DSを説明することもできました。

私はKITをGPA3.84（大学成績評価値）で卒業し、居合道研修も修了しました。2024年3月にインドネシアに帰国してからはKITで得た知識を活かしたいと思い、公共事業・住宅省でのキャリアを追求しています。
KITで学び、JICAのプログラムに参加したことは、充実した経験でした。私の旅が、未来のJICA奨学生たちに、献身的に勉学に取り組み、与えられた機会を十分に受け入れるよう促すことを願っています。「ガンバリマス！」

I am writing to share my experience while studying at the Kitami Institute of Technology (KIT) in Hokkaido, Japan, under a scholarship provided by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). In 2021, I was honored to receive a scholarship for a Master’s Degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering. I enrolled at KIT in April 2022 and arrived in Kitami in June 2022 due to COVID-19 travel restrictions.
Upon arrival, I was mesmerized by Kitami's serene and green environment, far removed from the hustle and bustle of city life, making it an ideal place for study. The people of Hokkaido were welcoming and open to foreigners, further enhancing my positive experience.

My academic journey was guided by Professor Kazuya Tomiyama, a brilliant and kind mentor, under whose guidance I completed 20 credits of coursework in my first year. The courses were engaging, and filled with advanced technology and information, although occasionally only available in Nihongo. Alongside my studies, I visited project sites in Abashiri and Kushiro with my laboratory colleagues, gaining hands-on experience with Japan’s advanced maintenance technologies.
During summer and winter breaks, JICA organized seminars on Road Asset Management in Tokyo, Nagoya, and Osaka. Keeping us actively engaged and mentally stimulated. In my spare time, I pursued Iai-do, a traditional martial art, under Junichi Tamaki Sensei, former Vice President of KIT. I also had the opportunity to try Kitami's famous sports, curling and skiing.
In my second year, I focused on research, particularly the Development of IRI-based Maintenance Criteria using Trip-based and User Satisfaction Approaches. I conducted experiments using KIT-DS (Kitami Institute of Technology Driving Simulator) and subsequently wrote papers under Professor Tomiyama's guidance. This research allowed me to present at international conferences in Labuan Bajo, Indonesia, and Sapporo, Japan, as well as explain KIT-DS to JICA short-term course participants from various countries.
I graduated from KIT with a GPA of 3.84 and completed my training in Iai-do. Since returning to Indonesia in March 2024, I have been pursuing a career with the Ministry of Public Works and Housing, eager to apply the knowledge I gained at KIT.
Studying at KIT and participating in JICA's programs was an enriching experience. I hope my journey inspires future JICA scholars to approach their studies with dedication and to fully embrace the opportunities presented to them. Ganbarimasu!
